What we're up to at DrupalCon Asia in Mumbai

  • 9 minute read

It’s DrupalCon time again!

Acquia is once again a sponsor of DrupalCon, and those of us who have the chance to take part in DrupalCon Asia in Mumbai, India are getting excited.

Some of us (like me!) are traveling a long way to be there and meet new friends from the Indian community. Other colleagues are already part of the Indian Drupal community and are getting the chance to share their knowledge and experience with everyone at the big event on the Drupal calendar.

"Being part of the Indian community, it is very important to us that DrupalCon is coming to India as Drupal is becoming one of the prominent technologies of India. The event will be a boon to attract more people to Drupal and add more strength to the community. The Indian Drupal community has come a long way from what it was five years ago. The next challenge Drupal faces in India is to convince government to support more open source software." - Neetu Morwani, Drupal Developer at Acquia

Acquians will be involved in many of the aspects that make up a DrupalCon: from the summits on Thursday, to the Prenote (right before the Driesnote!), to the sessions and panel discussions starting Friday, to mentoring, teaching, training, and contributing at the code sprints.

We’ll be there are are looking forward to seeing you!

"The Drupal community [in India] has grown vastly in the last five years. I started working with Drupal in 2011. The community was not as big as it is at this time. Most people are trying to focus on giving back to the community by contributing anything--not only patches or to core.  Lots of people help in organizing events and sprints and so on." - Naveen Valecha, Senior Drupal Developer at Acquia

Acquia sessions at DrupalCon Asia, Mumbai

Here is a quick summary of some of the sessions and other activities you’ll be able to find us doing at DrupalCon Mumbai, 2016.

Friday, 2016.Feb.19

09:00-10:00 - The Prenote - “We’re outsourcing the Prenote”

  • Acquian: Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire
  • Room: Convocation Hall

A DrupalCon tradition, the “Prenote” is different every time, but always features Drupal community members--from first-timers, to Dries, and anyone in between--putting important and interesting information in your hands through the medium of fun. In the past, it has featured music, dancing, bad jokes, Git tutorials and much, much, more. It will be especially eye-opening if you've never been to DrupalCon, or never gotten up early enough to see one.

11:30-12:30 - Meet PHP-FIG: Your community just got a lot bigger, Drupal.

  • Acquian: Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire
  • Co-presenter: Campbell Vertesi, Senior Architect, ForumOne
  • Room: Hall 31

Drupal 8 is the first product of the PHP-FIG era--the age when PHP projects can work together--a meta-collection of home-grown code, mixed with Symfony2 framework components, 3rd party libraries, and a whole lotta love. This session will cover the basics of what PHP-FIG is, what its various PSR standards are and do, and what it means to be a part of the new, broader PHP community--including having better architecture, cleaner code, and more interoperability. We'll also be discussing what your projects can gain from all this.

12:45-13:45 - How can CMOs prepare for the collaboration age?

  • Acquian: Muktesh Kandpal
  • Room: Hall 22 | TATA Consultancy Services

Drupal’s technology and community provide more power and more flexibility than any other digital experience platform today when it comes to letting marketers proactively succeed in a digitally disrupted environment. Come to this session to learn how Drupal provides a unique opportunity for anyone involved in digital marketing--and who isn’t today?--to build your own marketing technology platform or product atop Drupal.

14:45-15:45 - Everything multilingual in Drupal 8

  • Acquian: Gábor Hojtsy
  • Room: Auditorium | Acquia

Drupal 8 is a truly outstanding CMS for anyone who needs to build websites and applications in any language, but especially those making multilingual sites. This session will show you around all the great improvements in D8 and give tips about how to best utilise the new solutions. If you have some experience in Drupal 6 or 7 multilingual site building, it’ll be a help, but even if you don’t and you’re interested in foreign/multilingual site building, you’ll still get a lot out of it.

17:30-18:30 - Drupal 8 with Backbone, and Underscore

  • Acquians: Abhishek Anand, Naveen Valecha
  • Room: Auditorium | Acquia

This session will cover Backbone.js and Underscore.js, the JavaScript frameworks that are included in Drupal 8. We’ll look at how they are used in core, how they can be extended in D8, API connections, and more. To get the most out of this session, you should be familiar with Drupal 8 development and JavaScript.

Saturday 2016.Feb.20

11:30-12:30 - Sustenance!!! Is internship a good way to sustain a steady pipeline of talent?

  • Acquian: Suchi Garg
  • Room: Hall 23

With 18+ years of IT experience in coding and management, Suchi Garg addresses the challenges of hiring Drupal resources in India today. Poaching isn’t sustainable; educational priorities don’t match our business needs yet and therefore don’t produce enough good candidates. She’ll explain how hiring the right interns and junior devs and turning them into great Drupalists might well be the hiring strategy of the future.

11:30-12:30 - Features v CMI - The battle for Drupal 8.

  • Acquian: Neetu Morwani
  • Room: Hall 21 | Blisstering Solutions

This session will include introductions to Drupal 8 Configuration Management--one of the most important new features in D8--and the Features Module. We’ll compare how CMI and Features work and what they each deliver. You’ll learn the differences between the two and see why Features is still important in Drupal 8 and how we can make the best use of both CMI and Features in our sites.

14:45-15:45 - Drupal 8 Lightning: The distribution for enterprise authoring

  • Acquian: Jacob Singh
  • Room: Hall 31

The Lightning Distribution was designed to enable developers to create great authoring experiences and empower editorial teams. Using standardized architectures and workflows, security audited modules, SAAS product integrations, and out-of-the-box automated testing, Lightning also cuts build times on projects in Drupal 7. And Lightning for Drupal 8 is just around the corner! In this session we will break apart Lightning into its components and demonstrate how to leverage its features in any Drupal build to create a rich editorial experience.

16:15-17:15 - Scaling Drupal 8

  • Acquians: Abhishek Anand, Naveen Valecha
  • Room: Hall 23

This session is an introduction to some performance optimization work that we have done on Drupal 8. It includes a general introduction to site performance, caching and optimisation strategies, client- and server-side dynamic substitution, working with various reverse proxy and 3rd party caching technologies, and more. To get the most out of this session, you’ll need to be familiar Drupal development, preferably D8 and have a basic understanding of all tiers of the LAMP stack.

17:30-18:30 - India's journey from a Consumption to Contribution culture and the road ahead - Panel Discussion

  • Acquian: Jeffrey A. "jam" McGuire.
  • Other panelists: Piyush Poddar, Mike Lamb, Megan Sanicki, Hussain Degamwallah
  • Room: Auditorium | Acquia

India is rapidly transitioning away from its old reputation of being a cheap, low quality, code-producing outsourcing hub for the rest of the world. Indian companies and developers are leading the charge in the transition from a code-consuming culture towards becoming the 2nd highest contributor country to Drupal 8 core. The international panel will discuss this evolution, current challenges, and compare them to their experiences in their own respective open source communities.
